Audiobook File Manipulation
This advice is given only as the process I use to EDIT my Audiobook collection. There will be those who prefer their Audiobooks in a different format. i.e. Chaptered or the file format itself.
There is no particular place to start, so I will begin with the FILE format itself. I prefer MP3 and in a single file. For a speech file, there is little or no benefit for using an audio resolution of higher than 64k. This only results in a larger file size.
The computer I use is Windows 10 based. My chosen pieces of Software are as follows:
If the book is a single file M4B for example I use the NCH suite. Specifically to convert to MP3 I use Switch Sound File Converter.
CAUTION: Make sure that the file to convert and the converted file are the same length.
If the book is in multiple files, such as a rip from TAPES, CD’s or a MULTI-FILE download, you may well have to convert to MP3 BEFORE doing any other editing.
For editing each individual file within a multi-file book, I use WavePad Sound Editor. With this, I can remove the Beginning and / or the Ending announcements. Make sure to save each section at the same bitrate as the original file.
There are several pieces of Software that I use to JOIN the now Multi-Part MP3 books.
In no particular order:
WavePad Sound Editor can be used to join multi parts into a Single file. Unfortunately, however, on occasion it can reduce the length of each of the latter end files. It really does pay to check the total book length for a comparison.
Foobar2000 is another of the MP3 joiners that I use, and it is FREE. It is relatively easy to use BUT it only saves in VBR (Variable Bit Rate). That can be a bit annoying if the original files are CBR (Constant Bit Rate). The conversion and joining quality seems to be OK
MP3 Splitter Joiner Pro is the next joiner that I use. It is nice and easy to use and allows much in adjusting the bit rates.
AGAIN, it is vital to check the length of the final book, I check the lengths with Audible where applicable. There are various retailers of Audiobooks online that give full information such as Duration, Narrator and even Covers.
Now you have a single file Audiobook in MP3 format, you may find that the volume level is REALLY low. WavePad Sound Editor can solve this for you. Drag and Drop the file into the Editing area, using the LEVELS tab you can increase the volume. If you have joined a book that has been ripped from tape, you may find there is a HISS. This can be removed with the cleanup tab.
Now you have a Single File Audiobook, it may be part of a series. I find the best way to manage this is by having each Series in its own folder.
Audiobook Series - CMD - Mel Starr - Hugh de Singleton, Surgeon Chronicles (01 Book)
I use Bulk Rename Utility to ensure that each book in the series conforms to the same naming protocol, (Capitalized, Author, Series, Book Number, Book Title) This protocol predates me collecting Audiobooks.
Melvin Starr - Hugh de Singleton, Surgeon Chronicles 01 The Unquiet Bones
I then use MP3Tag to deal with the Tagging to ensure the Author, Book Number, Series and Narrator are in place.
Finally, I use MusicBee to complete the tagging. I copy the covers from where I can (I try to be accurate) I use the year of the Original release date of the book.
I go to these lengths as I TRY to ensure that the eBook collection I have matches the Audiobook collection as much as is humanly possible.
The next section in this thrilling story line. Conversion of Audible .AAX files.
I have recently been given a multi part multi book omnibus collection. The culprit is aware of their identity.
The program to use is InAudible. Currently at V1.97. Nice piece of kit. You can convert *.AAX to pretty much what you want.
In my particular case I opted to go direct to mp3. Reasons are: Although you can remove the 'Audible' bits, sometimes they include a part of the book.
Then I went to WavePad Sound Editor in each section. Removed the parts I needed to remove and saved each file.
I then used fre.ac - Free Audio Converter to join all the parts together. Many thanks to linebackr.
From 4 separate AAX files to a single mp3 file.
Sounds good and is now on my cloud. Enjoy

May I suggest fre.ac - Free Audio Converter. I prefer my audiobooks in mp3 as well because I listen on my iphone...fre.ac is drag and drop, simple, and will convert any audio format to any other. I cannot recommend this lightweight free program too highly!

Hi dragonbandit
Thank you for your advice on Audiobook file manipulation.
I find what you do interesting and I'm always keen to learn from others.
I've been collecting audiobooks for around 30 years and have a sizeable collection, however nowhere near this forum's collection.
The one difference I note is that you use MP3Tag. I have a copy, but haven't used it. I've been using Tag&Rename for several years from https://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm. It's been specially designed for audiobooks. Even though it's not been updated since 2018, it still works well.
Kind regards and thanks
dj

A Freeware program I use for splitting and joining is mp3DirectCut, from https://mpesch3.de. I've also used it to remove empty space from cassette recordings.

On macOS, for multi-file downloads:
To get "gfind": brew install findutils
To concat multiple mp3 files (named sequentially - eg: 01.mp3, 02.mp3): ffmpeg \ -f concat \ -safe 0 \ -i <(gfind "$(pwd)" -iname "*.mp3" -printf "file ###%p###\n" | sed "s/'/\'\\\\'\'/g; s/###/\'/g" | sort -V) \ -acodec copy \ -metadata title="Author - Title" \ "../Author - Title.mp3"
To test the sequencing of the files (used in the above command): gfind "$(pwd)" -iname "*.mp3" -printf "file ###%p###\n" | sed "s/'/\'\\\\'\'/g; s/###/\'/g" | sort -V
