I have them but wont seem to join  to 1 file after coverting  to mp3 and tried to join them to 1 file

I used freac - free audio converter exclusively for all conversions and joining.
Single file books, just drop the file into the work area.
Multi file books, drop the folder into the workspace.
Making sure that the box 'Encode to single file' is crossed
Job done
